Planet enters the global vehicle tolling market to power fast and frictionless payments

- Unifies payments across online, in-app, and in-person for a frictionless experience
- Equips toll operators with fast, secure and contactless payments technology
- Reduces transaction times and eases congestion for drivers and passengers

Planet, a leading global payments and technology provider, has announced its strategic expansion into the $12.8bn global vehicle tolling system market.

This builds on Planet’s strong position in the transport, mobility and unattended verticals, helping toll operators modernise their customers’ experience, reduce congestion and grow revenue, through the deployment of advanced payments technology.

- Faster, seamless toll transactions: Planet’s integrated technology is proven to reduce payments transaction times by over two-thirds*, supporting smoother vehicle flow and minimising queues at toll booths during peak travel times.

- Smooth checkout process for online transactions: Planet’s mobile SDK brings in-app and online payments together for a faster and pain-free customer checkout experience.

- High specification terminals and backend systems: integrated PAX and Verifone hardware, backed by Planet’s full-stack gateway, supports contactless cards, local payment methods (such as iDEAL in the Netherlands), mobile wallets and fleet cards, putting customers in charge of how and when they want to pay.

- One provider for all payments: unifies online, in-app, and in-person payments through a single partnership, simplifying implementation, integrations and operations for toll operators, while avoiding the need for customers to resubscribe with their payment details.

- Generates additional revenue from payments: customers can pay in the currency of their choice thanks to electronic dynamic currency conversion (eDCC), giving them greater choice and convenience, while helping toll operators grow revenue.

As part of its end-to-end tolling solution, Planet provides operators with a complete omnichannel payments platform that includes mobile-optimised interfaces, modern terminals, and consultative support to meet the unique demands of high-volume vehicle traffic management.

This is supported with point-to-point encryption (P2PE) and industry-leading PCI compliance, helping operators deliver a superior customer experience and drive more revenue, with minimal disruption for customers.

“Tolling is the next natural step in the development of our transport and mobility payments business,” said Colin Close, Chief Commercial Officer at Planet. “By unifying online, in-person, and terminal payments into a single, flexible solution, toll operators everywhere can speed up transactions, cut congestion, and improve the driving experience, while enhancing operational efficiency and environmental outcomes.”

Planet’s solution is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing transport infrastructure and to scale with the evolving needs of tolling and mobility providers. The platform supports both attended and unattended terminals, helping partners create a truly frictionless end-to-end journey, whether customers pay at the booth, in an app, or online.
